February
is National Cancer Prevention Month
Statistically 1 in 2 men and 1
in 3 are women diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
In New Hampshire alone, there are 7,000 new cases and
2,600 deaths each year, making it the leading cause of death
in the state (see
2011 New Hampshire State Health Profile).
There
are many ways to reduce your risk of developing cancer. The
NH CCC’s Primary Prevention and Early Detection Work Groups
have identified numerous objectives outlined in the
New Hampshire Comprehensive
Cancer Control Plan
to decrease cancer risk.
Current efforts of the work groups focus on four areas of
prevention:
-
avoiding tobacco use
-
maintaining a healthy
weight and activity level
-
protecting yourself
from the harmful effects of the sun and indoor tanning
-
receiving recommended
screening tests. Colorectal and cervical cancer
screening can find changes early and prevent cancer from
developing.
NH CCC
works collaboratively with hundreds of partners to share
resources and implement strategies that address the burden
of cancer in New Hampshire. Learn
more about NH CCC strategies to reduce cancer statewide in
the
New Hampshire Comprehensive
Cancer Control Plan.
